Governor Vetoes Budget
Governor does the right thing --- vetoes “fatally flawed” budget approach
· We welcome the Governor’s veto and challenge to a bi-partisan budget approach.
· An inclusive bi-partisan approach will moderate extremist elements in the legislature which targeted education and health and human services for deep cuts and major restructuring.
· As widely reported, the Legislature passed a budget on July 1st trying to stave off a government shutdown. Nine bills were transmitted to the Governor. For specific references go to: http://www.azleg.gov/jlbc/newpage.htm
· However, about five hours later, the other shoe dropped and the Governor vetoed major parts of the Legislative budget and called for a special session to start on Monday July 6 at 1pm. See the link at http://azgovernor.gov/dms/upload/PR_070109_GovBrewerBudgetStatement.pdf
· The Governor calls the Legislative budget “fatally flawed” and asks that legislators “rededicate themselves in a bi-partisan fashion” to craft a new budget for Arizona’s future.
MORE ADVOCACY AHEAD IN THE SPECIAL SESSION.
· The Special Session will begin Monday July 6 at 1pm. Be prepared for more advocacy action.
· The Governor’s call includes two items (1) adjustments in the budget for the fiscal year, and (2) imposition of a temporary tax to raise revenue for education, health and human services and public safety.
· Your steadfast advocacy efforts made a difference during this difficult struggle, holding the Legislature accountable for their bad decisions.
· Strong sustained advocacy will be needed during the special session.
· WE must not give into advocacy fatigue. This has been long and hard session with more struggles to come, but children, families and vulnerable adults depend upon our voices for justice and good public policy.
Call or write the Governor now! Call 602-542-4331 or email her through her contact page http://azgovernor.gov/Contact.asp and tell her:
“Thank you for your courageous decision to veto the legislative budget. You have kept government running, yet rejected deep cuts and flawed policies from taking effect. A bipartisan solution is the only way to solve this crisis. Please reach out to reasonable policymakers of BOTH parties and craft a budget that preserves the health and human services safety net for vulnerable children, adults and their families.
